Consultant Physiotherapist in Paediatric Neuromuscular Disorders.
Marion studied Physiotherapy in Newcastle, now 40 years ago, and after working in a general post in London spent 18 months working in spinal injuries. She left there to work as a physiotherapist abroad. It was at this time she felt she lacked paediatric experience and returned to redress that.
Since 1982 she has worked almost exclusively in paediatrics,
She became head of the Paediatric Physiotherapy Service at Hammersmith Hospital and Dubowitz Neuromuscular Service in 1989 30 years ago. At the beginning there was a general and neonatal caseload as well as neuromuscular. The service is the largest neuromuscular service in the country seeing over 2000 children per year and one of the largest in Europe. The whole muscle team moved to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 2008.
The unit sees children from babies to 18, and includes all conditions that come under the neuromuscular “umbrella”; including limb girdle muscular dystrophies, of which Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the largest group, congenital muscular dystrophy and myopathy, neurogenic conditions including Spinal Muscular Atrophy and arthrogryposis and a very large cohort of peripheral neuropathies (CMT). The hospital now regularly sees a cohort of over 30 infants and children with SMA 1.
Marion teaches at home and abroad and is part of several studies into clinical management of children with muscle disease. She has been contributor to many publications and has been involved in writing standards of care for SMA, Congenital Myopathy and Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. She has travelled extensively with her work including some time in India and does regular clinics in Greece.
With a friend who is a 6th Dan black belt, she set up Karate workshops for children with disabilities.
Marion has a Master’s Degree in Designing Equipment for Disability working closely with companies that make children’s toys and equipment, and has a special interest in orthotics.
